I don't write a lot of serious posts. I try to leave that to the serious writers. I prefer to talk about stuff that makes me laugh but yesterday I ran across something that I didn't think was funny at all.
I don't think that anyone would deny the fact that there are more famous male athletes than female athletes. I am okay with that. Title IX and the evolution of our society are going to slowly even things out (I hope) eventually. I wasn't terribly surprised when I had some trouble finding blog posts on the greatest female athletes of all time when I was doing research for this post on BlogHer.
Let me show you what DID surprise me:

No. I meant WNBA. And I meant it when I typed it here too.

Were you looking for information about why Mia Hamm is considered to be one of the greatest female soccer players? You could check it out on a lovely feature called... wait for it... profiles in poontang.

Do you need a picture of Anna Kournikova for your tennis post? I hope these will do because these are the first search hits.

Let's compare it to the exact same shot of the first page of images for Roger Federer:

Why is he always fully dressed. He must not swim as much.
And if you are female fan of NASCAR this should make you very proud.

Wait - people aren't taking her seriously? I wonder why?
So my friends, here is part of the problem. Now how do we even begin to fix it?

They were talking about this in our local paper the other day...how insane the sexism is in sports media.
Great post! Thank you for bringing this up!
Wow. Very powerful post. I'm hanging onto it to refer to when I have to argue with folks about the importance of Title IX.
GRRR AND GRRRR AND GRRRR
This also reminds me it's been a long time since I posted here, sorry. Damn election.
That being said...UGH.
What do we do about...excellent question...need to think first. Right now just mad.
Queen mad. Queen smash.
wow. i mean, i don't like sports, but i love us women. this is nuts. great post.
Oh, crap, there is no way I can word this without sounding like a "man", but it's how I feel:
Perhaps if Anna Anna Kournikova were a better tennis player, they would have more pictures of her playing, well, tennis. Those are modeling shots, mostly, as in how she chose to make her money.
Roger Federer, on the other hand, is not known for his modeling, but for being a dominant tennis player. Hence the photos you will find of him are doing his job.
I'm not disagreeing that there are still HUGE disparities in how women and men are portrayed with regards to sports, but I think choosing Anna as an example is more than a little misleading
I'm completely shocked. I shouldn't be, but I am. Wow.
Sadly, I'm not surprised. It gets frustrating that things seem to never change, no matter our efforts.
Unbelievable.
What year is it, again?
poontang? nba? damn.
